• Defining Statement: Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

• The original name of the organization was “The Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order Brothers,” “BOB” for short.
• Within a year, the name was changed to Kiwanis, taken from a term from an Otchipew Indian Tribe who lived in the Detroit area where Kiwanis was founded.
• The original phrase, “Nunc Kee-wanis,” comes from an American Indian language and means ”we trade” or “we have a good time”.

Kiwanis International is the worldwide organization to which each Kiwanis club and member belongs. It is administered by the Kiwanis International Board of Trustees.
